Win $50 in a Contest from Xavier Media – Review

February 8, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

Andreas over at Xavier Media is holding a $50 contest and asked me for a review to help promote it. Basically, the gist of the contest is that you can win $50 by promoting a site and make money in the process through affiliate links.

The rules of the contest are below:

  1. 1. First join the Xavier Media affiliate program hosted over at Share a Sale.
  2. Write a blog post about, a web hosting reseller. You can write about whatever you want as long as you include some of the packages eXavier offers.
  3. Link to using the affiliate links you attain in step 1. This way you’ll be able to receive credit for your referrals and make some money.

On Feburary 29, Andreas will randomly pick a lucky winner for the $50 cash prize. Only those affiliates who have referred a sale are eligible to win.

My thoughts on this contest

The contest in theory sounds good. The concept is to attract webmasters and bloggers to join an affiliate program, have them make money, and reward them with more money with a contest. In practice, however, this is much harder to do than it sounds. First of all, Andreas runs a web hosting company, which is in an extremely saturated market difficult to compete in. Requiring affiliates to have made a sale in order to win the $50 will be a big turn off to most people. Furthermore, eXavier is a reseller of GoDaddy so there really isn’t much that differentiates it in a crowded niche.

Regardless, below are some of the hosting packages that Andreas offers through his company. He’s also throwing in a domain name for $1.99 with an order of any hosting package.

There are tons of hosting companies out there and honestly I think Andreas will have a tough time competing, especially if he is a one man show reselling GoDaddy packages. Customer service and support are 2 of the biggest components and there are companies out there who thrive in this department. I use LiquidWeb for example and the service they provide is absolutely phenomenal.

If you like the hosting packages that eXavier has to offer, I suggest that you join the affiliate program and refer yourself for a chance to win $50. You can also distribute affiliate links on your site or blog but you may have a difficult time referring new sales.

eXavier is part of the Xavier Media Network that contains a variety of web services. According to Andreas on the About page, “Xavier Media™ Group is a group of new media companies providing all kinds of services to the Internet community. Services include domain name registration, web hosting, script development, password protection, marketing services, advertising opportunities and much more.”

Honestly I think Xavier Media has way too many components which take away from the focus of the site. What is the core competence of Xavier? Components include Xavier Mail, XavierPedia, Xavier Seek, Xavier Forum, eXavier hosting, Xavier Media Blog, etc. There are too many sections that overwhelm the visitors and take away from the user experience. My suggestion is to either concentrate on one core aspect of the business or to separate each of the sections into separately branded sites (that don’t use “Xavier”).

Good luck to Andreas in this contest. You can read the original contest post here:

Sure, let us know how it goes for you.

Seems a decent idea, but the prize could be changed.

Why promote a new (well, unestablished compared to the big guns) hosting company like eXavier and make x commission + maybe $50 when you could promote HostGator and make $100 off a $20 sale? 😉

Hey Jason,
Well this was a paid review of eXavier’s web hosting contest. I think it would see better results if the prize value was higher.

A contest to earn some money, people probably be more interested on it by giving more prize.
