Winning the Web Redesign – What Do You Think?

September 28, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

Hey everyone, I’ve been meaning to redesign Winning the Web into more of a magazine-style format for the longest time now – and I was finally able to get to it this week using one of Brian Gardner’s amazing Revolution Wordpress themes.

I’ll soon be writing a detailed post about all of the changes and their benefits, but first I wanted to do a quick poll and get your feedback.

What do you think of the Winning the Web redesign? Do me a favor and submit your vote in the poll.

Here’s what the previous theme looked like:

What do you think about the new Winning the Web redesign?

Gyutae, I think it will be a good idea to have a redesign. Not that you need it, but sometimes it’s good to have some change (in a good way). :)

I can’t wait to see what you do man. I’m looking forward to it.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks Sly. You’re absolutely right. Sometimes it’s a good idea to redesign – just for a fresh change. The only thing is that you need to maintain your brand identity through it all. So what do you think of the new design?

Hey Gyutae,

I’ve always been a fan of magazine style themes. I like it. I was very impressed with Chow’s new design.

By the way, Trend Spike will be relaunching in January as a multi-author online magazine. Don’t want you to think the prizes I won in your contest went to waste :-)

In fact, I just recently had the consultation with Daniel from dailyblogtips.com

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Haha, that’s good to know. I hope you make the most of the prizes you win. Best of luck with Trend Spike. It has a lot of potential as long as you stick with it. You’re using a magazine style on it as well, correct?

It’s much better then the old one, thats for sure.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks! The themes are pretty similar in color scheme and design, but this one is a little bit sleeker and has more of a web 2.0 feel to it. Plus the magazine homepage is a lot more effective in my opinion.

Lucas on September 28th, 2008

I prefer the old one, but then again this magazine style theme would do. ;)

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks for the honest feedback, Lucas. What is it about the old theme that you liked better?

Myself I love what the citrus theme can do from UBD, as far as a over the shelf theme I have not seen one any better. I use it on all my sites I have.

As far as this one goes, its ok. Really I had to look at both for a fewseconds, the change is very suttle and if you hadn’t been here for a while you would not notice it.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Hey Collin,
I like the Citrus theme as well, very clean. I’m not a big fan of white text on dark background but I think it works well for FeedFlare.

The Winning the Web redesign might be a subtle change for most casual visitors, but for me it’s huge because I stare at this thing every day.

Looks very similar to some other big named blogs, but I like it. It’s clear and professional looking.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks Clog Money. I like to see what the big-name blogs are doing because they get huge amounts of traffic and have a lot more leverage in terms of testing site features. If they’re doing something it probably means it’s effective.

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but on my Mac with FireFox 3, the post is in the center and your sidebar is pushed down below it. It looks fine in Safari.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks for letting me know John. That’s really strange – it’s coming out fine for me on my PC for IE, Firefox, and Chrome. Have you had this problem before with other sites? Do you get this with all post pages on WTW?

John Chow on September 28th, 2008

I see you got it it fixed. Looks good now.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Gyutae Park on September 29th, 2008

Yep, it was just a CSS padding issue. Strange how it only affected Firefox 3 on Macs though. Thanks again for your help John.

I like the new design a lot better; you can see a lot more at a glance.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks, that’s the whole point of a magazine-style layout. The biggest weakness of a standard blog design is that it puts emphasis on the most recent posts – which may not always be optimal in gaining new readers.

wisdom on September 28th, 2008

I think it is a great improvement and I noticed you can visit the blog too to make it look more like the old one.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Yep, get the best of both worlds in that regard. The blog layout is less important now that the homepage is magazine-styled now though.

Dan Grossman on September 28th, 2008

Looks good to me. Very clear layout and good ad placements.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks Dan. I may even incorporate your WP Review Site plugin into a section of the site. Review coming soon… :)

Gerri on September 28th, 2008 Subscribed to comments via email

I like it. It is nice and clean and very easy on the eyes.

Gyutae Park on September 28th, 2008

Thanks Gerri. That’s the most important thing – not too flashy, clean and easy to read so that the emphasis is placed on the content itself.

O.Messaoud on September 29th, 2008

Looks good. Same spirit as John Chow’s.

Gyutae Park on September 29th, 2008

Thanks! Yeah, I really like the layouts John Chow and Darren Rowse use and incorporated some of their elements.

It looks great much better than the old one
