Win a Free $400 Review From John Chow – You Can’t Miss This
December 5, 2007 - Written by Gyutae Park
Want to explode your site’s traffic for the holiday season rush? Many Internet and technology-related sites have experienced exceptional results by receiving a paid review from JohnChow.com, a blog that has over 14,000 loyal RSS subscribers and generates over $27,000 per month in revenue. In fact, you can view some of the John Chow review case studies below:
Winning the Web was just recently reviewed and to maximize exposure I am giving away a John Chow review free of charge. A review usually costs $400 through ReviewMe but I’m literally going to go ahead and buy it for you and your website of choice. This has never been done before on any site so you don’t want to miss out on this great opportunity.
Here’s how it’s going to work
For the next 2 weeks, I am going to display a scrambled word/phrase, adding 1 letter at a time in 11 upcoming posts. These letters can only be viewed in a feed reader so you must subscribe to the Winning the Web RSS feed. The 11 scrambled letters, when unscrambled, make up a phrase/word. Be the first to guess what it is, and you win the John Chow review.
Recap on how to win
- Subscribe to the Winning the Web RSS feed.
- Look for letters at the end of upcoming Winning the Web posts.
- Unscramble the 11 letters and be the first to figure out the correct word/phrase.
- Win a free John Chow review to advertise your site.
Some rules
- Letters will be added to the scrambled message in random upcoming posts on Winning the Web. You must subscribe to the RSS feed to view it.
- To take a guess at the unscrambled word/phrase, you must comment on this post.
- You can guess what the word/phrase is at any time in the process, but only 1 entry per person (by website & ip address).
- You must enter the web site you want reviewed when commenting on this post.
- Winner will be announced Friday, December 21, 2007.
Hint
- The unscrambled code is made up of 2 words (11 letters total) and is a ‘thing’.
I will also be providing additional hints randomly in upcoming posts. So it’s important that you subscribe to the feed and check back often. Good luck!

Update (Dec 8th) : Due to the strong response and participation levels of this contest, I am going to go even further and add an additional prize. What’s the prize you ask? A John Cow review! ($200 value). JohnCow.com rose to fame as a unique John Chow copycat but now has over 800 RSS subscribers and offers a winning perspective on making moo-ney online.
The John Cow review will go to a random commentator on all Winning the Web posts in December. However, the winner will be announced via RSS feed so it’s still important to subscribe. The winner then has 24 hours to claim the prize. Otherwise, a new winner will be chosen.
If you like this post, subscribe to the RSS feed. Get the latest updates delivered straight to your email or news reader.

I’m subscribed. I look forward to following your blog.
Wow, nice contest. I subscribed to your feed a long time ago, but read off the site more often than not. Will take a look!
I’m subscribed
I’m subscribed as well. Hopefully my website is finished by the time this contest is over, in case I manage to win
.
Hmm.. I can’t subscribe… I get the error:
“The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled”
Any ideas?
PS Congrats on the publicity push! Shoemoney and John Chow plugs in the same day! Good work. Shoe’s blog brought me here, your contest is brilliant. You’ve won over a devoted reader.

I subscribed to your feed Gyutae when I won your first blog audit contest. Way to go Gyutae.
Great idea I should say… I owe my first online dollars to the Great John Chow… I am planning to write a review worth $50 in my blog for free in praise of johnchow.com.
Looking forward to your feeds…
I subscribed as well!
Subscribed to your feed!!
Hello,
Interesting contest:) I’ve subscribed to your feed.
Cheers!
Subscribed amazing contest and great offer!
I subscribed to your feed.
Great idea and great promotion. First time I have heard of your site so already working
.
I subscribed to the feed and ready to give it a go.
Couple questions…I assume the “one entry” is for the whole 11 days right? We can’t make a guess/entry after each new clue right?
And as far as needing to post the blog/site that would be reviewed if won, are we able to choose an affiliate product for him to review instead? I was actually hoping to have that done on his blog soon but just too broke right now lol.
Anyway, great idea and congrats on the traffic, feed subs, and new readers already!
I’m in!!!
I’m subscribed. When do the secret letters start? Next post? Tomorrow?
This is an intersting concept to get people to subscribe. Ofcourse, I am subscribed
I have subscribed. Can’t wait to see those jumbled little letters.

How do you put the specific content (letter) in the feed and not in the regular blog? Is there a plugin? code? Thanks.
(sorry put comment previously in another post by mistake)
Thanks to everyone for participating. This should turn out to be a great contest. May the best descrambler win!
@Tyler Cruz
Thanks for pointing this out. This issue has been resolved and you may now subscribe by email.
@Domain Name Tips
Yes, one entry is for the whole 11 days not after every new clue.
If you win you can have John Chow review anything you want. Just be warned that he is usually very blunt and this can actually hurt you.
@Turk Hit Box
Hmmm… is that going to be your final guess?
@Babak
I use a WordPress plugin called Feed Footer to do this.
Hello,
Just blogged about your blog contest post here.
http://www.bloggingcontest.com/win-a-johnchowcom-review-worth-400/
Also you can always submit any future contests to http://www.blogcontests.com without waiting for some one to write about it.
Great contest! Count me in!
Hi there
I blogged about your contest here – http://www.contestbeat.com/win-a-400-johnchowcom-review/
All we do is write about contests in the blogosphere so hopefully we can send you a few more entries too!

Nice work with this site! What a cool contest idea.
Thanks for the contest links.
The Word is winjohnchow!!!!!! I WON!!!! xD
Hi! Erm…is the answer ‘Free Reviews’?
I susbscribed to this post in my iGoogle, but I am sent back to this page every time i click on it…how do i go the RSS feed and see the letter?
I am entering this contest and the website to be reviewed in case I win is the one I used in commenting this: NSpeaks.com
Subscribed! The prize is exciting! Who would want to miss the chance of winning a John Chow review?
Blogged about your contest at http://www.submityourcontest.com/win-a-review-at-johnchowcom-worth-400 /
SYC is a new contest blog blogging about contests. Hope this sends you some extra entries.
SYC
I too would like to enter the contest. Please add me to the list. Thanks.
Sign me up for the cow review. I want to hear what that copycow has to say about me.
Wow Gyutae! Another great idea. Let me in on that Cow review. Hehe. Great picture too, really cute cow. Haha. I can see that your blog’s growth has been explosive! Good job buddy!
Sign me up Gyutae, would love a review from either of them.
Wow this is getting too interesting. Moooo Wow..
Good job Gyutae
Nice way to get more traffic in! Kudos.
And yet another cool addiction. Only need a few more top bloggers to see this and offer up prizes for pretty much everyone in the industry to hear about the winners. Very cool.
And lol at chow wanting to win the cow review! Although I would love to win, I vote to let chow have it heheh.
Great contest.Very original idea(s)! I hope you’ll write a post detailing how it affected your blog income, traffic, comments, etc, etc, etc
Great Contest Prize addition in form of review at johnCow.com!
I wish I win..!
I’ve subscribed. Great idea!
What a great idea to get new RSS subscribers and commenters. Creative
Woah, I love to have the Cow review more than the Chow (is that why he eats so much?)review.
Why? I have been reading the Cow regularly, an I am always entertained by them.
Thanks for the continued support. This should get very interesting…
@bmunch
It’s ironic that although John Cow is the copycow, his style differs a lot from Chow. Both provide great stuff.
Great contest, I’m looking forward to following to the end.
Well you got me interested! I am ready to have a few guesses. How do we submit our guesses though. By email or by comments?
@motorsportBABESau
You are allowed only 1 guess per website/ip address. You can take your guess by commenting on this post. That way it keep things fair because everyone will be able to see who was first. All of this in in the rules section so make sure your read it thoroughly.
nice contest..would love to win a johncow.com review!
Great contest, I’ve subscribed.
I just hope John likes my blog when I win!
Nabbed the feed and here’s the comment.
I hope I haven’t missed any of the letters. I am a little late on getting in.
Subscribed. Looking forward to unscrambling those letters!
I’m in as well
I want to know, is it a “NEW REVENTON” ? Saw the car on John’s blog, either way, its very nice!
One guess! Thats ridiculous. How about 1 guess each day or 1 guess for each new letter. I have heaps of ideas but I dont want to put an end to my chances.
@motorsportBABESau
Well there are going to be potentially hundreds of people in this contest. If everyone were just guess everything that popped into their head, it would either be over very quickly. Or just be annoying and boring. 1 guess makes it much more important guess right the first time
NEW REVENTON, that could be it. No answer yet?
subscribed.
Great contest, and congrats on all the publicity. I’ve also added the contest to my contest blog, and it should show up soon on the main page.
In order for a chance to win the $200 review, all I have to do is post here? Thanks.
NEW REVENTON… hmmmm, final answer?
@Josh
Yes, to win the $200 John Cow review, all you have to do is comment. All comments on all posts in December on Winning the Web are considered entries for this prize. The more you post, the higher your chances of winning.
As for the $400 John Chow review, it’s a little bit more difficult – but not anything you can’t figure out in a couple of minutes.
Good luck!

Final answer
OK is it…
Nah actually I am not ready to blow my chances just yet!
I not so sure about all these contests flying around all over the place. I have entered in so many and nothing has come of it. There have been a few that have been a downright scam. I guess such is life. I guess you can go on and on and enter so many and maybe one day win or not?
lol, yeah Gerri. I guess we will know if Shoemoney somehow ends up winning the John Chow review and then John wins the Cow review lol
.
I think this is one of the good ones though
.
Doh, meant to ask…Gyutae, if someone guesses (or has already guessed correctly) and post and it is the right one will you be saying so or will we not find out until after? Just curious if anyone has already gotten is or not
.
Great idea, subscribed =]
To many contest in a short period of time but who knows maybe we can win some.
I still cannot figure it out. I had a exam at University today with some random riddle question added to it, and could not figure it out either.
Hopefully, I become better and rack my brain so I can find the answer.
ReadChowAndCow?
That’s wrong, I forgot about the hint
So we can only guess once right?
For the above question, Yes.
Has anyone won yet?
@DotDriven
I won’t be announcing the winner until Dec 21. However, as the letters are revealed one by one the correct answer will become clear and you’ll know if the people before you were wrong.
@MikeonTV
Yes you can only guess once.
No one has won yet… Remember the hints!
one reason i won’t be joining this great contest ..
im occupying a 10gb/m bandwidth so if ill win.. im doomed.. lolz!
good luck guys.
@Rodel
What’s the problem with that? It should be plenty.
@Gyutae Park,
it would be great man, but i think my site can’t handle the traffic if ever.
..
just a start up.. but id really love to you join..
. anyway, ill give it a try though..
@Rodel
Well you can always upgrade in time if you do end up winning. This is a great opportunity and it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot. Good luck!
just subscribed.
.. now where are those winning post and were are the hints.. hmmm..
it’s really hard when an moron like me joins such fun fair hihi..
@Rodel
The scrambled code is appended to the end of upcoming posts. They can only be seen in your feed reader.
I have subscribed. And my guess is…
Ahh I don’t know the answer yet.
Great giveaway.
I have subscribed and my guess is…
Chow Readers
Hope it right, best of luck WTW
I would love to have a review for oneeurowiki.com
I gonna go with the hinthint and try the
“read johncow”
as my, read uhmmm guess… and posting in the right thread. hope that pays off for me :>
I think you won sven. Good guess. I was going to use the review for my website http://www.abigarcade.com, but it is hard to figure out what to guess as you only have once chance.
Rodel, if you need hosting, then contact me here. I have some good servers and am always happy to provide hosting to others. My prices are reasonable.
oh before I forget, the website is the site in my link in case I win(haha, I do not think I have a remote chance), httP://www.svensworld.de
Unscrambled Code: READJOHNCOW
Site to review: TylerCruz.com
Thank you.
Am I too late?
Oops, I could almost swear I didn’t see Sven’s comment above when I posted.. congrats Sven!
From post: “The unscrambled code is made up of 2 words (11 letters total) and is a ‘thing’.”
I’m almost positive that “read johncow” is not a Thing. That’s an action. But I could be wrong.
But, if I were a betting man (which I’m not) I’d bet others still have a shot.
Two words and a thing. Don’t think you guys are on the right track lol. Though who knows, could be wrong.
READJOHNCOW is incorrect. Next letter to come on Sunday. Stay tuned. Remember the hint: 2 words and a “thing”
Subscribed. Can’t wait to try and win
What a great concept for a competition… good luck to everyone. I personally wrote the article on the AdToll blog about our “Chow Effect” and whoever wins this contest will hopefully experience the same thing!
A thing hmm… I wonder what that would be.
ah I had to try it
gl everyone else.
I thought you had surely won sven! I didn’t even remember hint #2.
“You had to try” Well, you don’t know unless you try…
Good luck everyone!

No letter today?
I do not understand. There was no letter today as well. Is this contest over?
Josh,
There was a letter today on the latest post. Check it again in your feed reader. Only 4 more letters to go!
Are the letters in order, or do we have to unscramble them?
@Aditya
You need to unscramble them.
Thank you for providing us with the letter.
Josh Day
http://www.abigarcade.com
Gyutae, I did not receive the letter today nor yesterday. I am subscribed to the feed, but have received no email or anything. Just to make sure that I was subscribed, I submitted my email address again, but it said I was already subscribed. Please fix this as I would like to continue trying to win this contest. Thanks.
My email is ilovekb7@yahoo.com
This is the email that is subscribed to the feed.
Josh, you may want to try an RSS reader like Google reader instead. I notice that email usually takes awhile to get delivered after a post.
OMG, I missed a lot of fun. Let me guess… but before that I would need to check out your posts from just subscribed feed.

That might be the solution. Good luck
Josh Day
http://www.abigarcade.com
Probably going to hate myself for making a final guess too early but “no pain no gain” lol.
My final guess/entry:
Clam Chowder
Damn it Dot!!!! lol. I had it down to two answers and that was one of them. I was holding out until tonights post. I’m almost positive you won though, lol.
Clam CHOWder and he always takes pictures of his food.
Oh well, I’ll give my second answer a shot after the next post
lol sorry Jason. You holding off still might be the better decision. I was having a hard time deciding to post now myself or wait a bit longer. I actually already had that as one of my solutions but wanted to wait for more letters. But I do/did think it would be a play off of his name so decided that was the best choice. But even if it isn’t the actual answer it should be lol jk.
I have a couple others that might fit depending on the last couple letters but they didn’t stand out and grab me like this one
.
Good luck with your other solution! Just don’t wait too long to post it
.
Dot,
Ya I know what you mean. A day ago, I was going to submit “Crowded Race” and decided to hold off. Lucky I did, because then “M” was the next letter, haha. Then when I came up with “Clam Chowder” this morning, I wasn’t sure what to do, lol.
Good luck, and if you win (which I’m sure you did) I hope the Chow effect goes a long way for you
What “M”? I don’t see that in the letters I got.
Well, I never got the “M” letter in the rss, so I think I need to subscribe to a better feed. I think you did win. That was a good guess that you made. Well, we will see when Mr. Park replies back.
Well I guess I’m not the only one not getting it. How many letters did everyone else get? I got 8 so far.
Jerlene, you posted right before I did. I did not see your post since it only showed after I had posted. I guess the “M” really wasn’t there.
Did you get 8 letters, too or are there already 9?
I got 8 letters.
Thanks Josh. Won’t know until the 21st if it is the right one but I assume we will know right away if I am off if we see a different letter tomorrow lol.
As for the 9th letter (M), it came with the “tell your blogging story” post. I see it in there right now in google reader. Not sure why other readers wouldn’t show it?
I just subscribed through email. I guess everyone who subscribed through email isn’t getting them. I didn’t get that post either, at least I don’t think.
Yes, I subscribed through email as well.
Ya, like I mentioned above, email RSS takes awhile…sometimes days. I recommend using an RSS reader if you want the posts instantly.
I’m not going to announce a winner until Friday. Just 2 more letters left..
I subscribe and the scrambled letters are
R E A D C O W C M L
and I figured out that the correct
word/phrase is ” WELCOME CARD ”
am I right sir?
Stentorized,
That was my other guess lol. But I thought the other one sounded funner and more related.
But good luck!
Hi DotDriven,
thanks and good luck to you too..:)
Hi there, I’m going to take a guess…
Unscrambled word: CLAM CHOWDER
Site to review: http://www.sujjest.com
*crosses finger*
Err looks like that has already been guessed.
Oh well, I’ll change my guess to CALMED CROWD
CLAM CHOWDER
wow, maybe I won’t be upset with myself for taking the risk of guessing early lol. If it ends up being the correct answer looks like I wasn’t the only one that found it.
Now just have to hope it’s the right one *crosses fingers, toes, arms and legs for luck* lol.
wow, this is a tough cookie!
I’m going to go with:
Chowder Clam. Just in case it’s not Clam Chowder
I hope you guys win as you have tried your best. I cannot think of anything right now. Too stressed out about university finals…
Josh Day
http://www.abigarcade.com
Hi DotDriven,
Let us hope that the last letter
will be an ” H “…
goodluck!
Clam Chowder sounds about right. Good luck.
Can I reiterate that answer?
how about “CALM CHOWDER”? hehe
Clam Chowder
Today is my birthday, and yet I still have no luck. I think I am not going to attempt to win this contest since I don’t want to be wrong. Therefore, I will just keep a look on this topic and see who wins. Once again, good luck to all.
Well, yesterday is my birthday and I hope I will win too.
@Charles – Happy *Late* Birthday!
Good luck!
@Charles – Happy *Late* Birthday!
Good luck!
P.S. Sorry if I posted this two times, my internet connection is laggy right now.
Since my original guess was taken, I’m going to have to go with:
“ceramic wold”
it’s the only “thing” I could make out of it aside from clam chowder.
Anyways,
Good luck everyone.
I got a new email it shows yesterday’s letter. Was the last letter the “H” everyone was hoping for?
DotDriven is probably right with clam chowder.
Well, it doesn’t hurt to guess. So, I’ll go with chromed claw.
It’s confirmed now, the last letter is H. So the answer is CLAM CHOWDER.
http://www.johnchow.com/dinner-at-the-space-needle-with-kingston/
John Chow mentioned Clam Chowder in this post. So you see, it’s even related.
I guess DotDriven is the winner. He was the first to post Clam Chowder.
Clam Chowder but I’m too late
Anyway, the John Cow review is still possible to all
Site: 1 Cool File
I did not notice the trackback did not work for The Contest Winner
R E A D C O W C M L H
wow it is an ” H “…
congratulations DotDriven!
embrace yourself for the upsurge
of traffics coming from the guru’s
site…lol
goodluck!
Ok, so I’m going to have a go.
I’m guessing “Calm Cowherd”
and the site I’d like reviewed is
http://imakemoneyhoney.blogspot.com.
Thanks,
and great contest.
I’m pretty sure the answer is in fact Clam Chowder. Awwww. If you go to http://www.utsire.com/anagrams/ and type in the letters, and know that the answer is a ‘thing’ only one result comes up. Can you guess? Yes, it’s clam chowder.
Happy birthday Charles and Josh! Dot, gratz on the review! Be sure to let us know how the “John Chow Effect” works for you. I’m considering paying him for a review myself.
Congrats DotDriven
best of luck to you.
Eek, I’m a little too late also. Oh, well…
I think you’re all wrong…it HAS to be “Comedy Crawl”!
@Jason – Thanks man!
DotDriven, good job! Good luck with your website. Hopefully you get a lot of traffic. I wish you success.
Heh, Nick, I believe you are the one that is wrong!
Comedy Crawl? Where’d that come from? I’m almost 100% sure it’s Clam Chowder.
Thanks for the good wishes everyone! But still a bit early to celebrate or assume lol
. I definitely hope it is the correct answer as I could really use the review but have learned not to assume too much heheh.
If I did in fact win then thanks to everyone that said something. If I didn’t happen to win then I am still glad I took part as there have been some really cool people and I have found some great new sites because of the contest, including winningtheweb
.
Now where to I send my bribe to guarantee a win? lol jk
Yayy. It must be clam chowder and DotDriven is the first to guess it. Congrats.
Oh Wow! I also had a feeling that it was Clam Chowder. A big congratulations to you DotDriven. All the clues point to your guess being correct. Hehe.
well.. because everybody has picked “Clam Chowder”, so i’ll take “Calm Chowder” then
John Chow is going to write a review about jackbook.com i guess!
Hi DotDriven,
Congrats!
it is official now
you are a winner man!
“MOO”
I would love to get the cow review for http://www.svensworld.de
thanks in advance
DotDriven, good job! Excellent guess! May success or traffic, in this case, appear at your door.
What a great way to boost readers!
