Week 1 of the Affiliate Marketing Showdown Versus Tyler Cruz

August 22, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

Alright so it’s been over a week since Tyler Cruz and I started our affiliate marketing showdown, but honestly little has happened since then. The whole point of the competition was to motivate both of us to work on our campaigns and to improve on our PPC affiliate marketing skills. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened yet.

I’m not going to sit here and complain. I’ve been extremely busy with SEO client work and some of the other projects on my plate, but a competition is a competition and I’m not going go down without putting up a fight.

Below are the few stats that I currently have. I chose an offer from a top affiliate network and drove traffic solely from the Google Adwords content network.

As you can see, I didn’t have any conversions the first 2 days, but revenue increased on the third day after I made a few tweaks. However, starting from the fourth day, my campaigns stopped sending traffic for some reason. I contacted Adwords support, but they never got back to me. I’m assuming it’s a Google slap because of my blatant 1-page affiliate site. Any other ideas?

In the next 2-3 weeks, I’ll have to build out a full affiliate microsite with various landing pages and articles (to prevent getting slapped by Google). I’ll also expand on my keywords, experiment with various ad copies, and try out Facebook Ads if I have time. I won a free copy of SpeedPPC compliments of Big Jason Henderson so that should definitely help in quickly getting my campaigns up as well.

As for now, it looks like I have the lead against Tyler, who has done nothing to improve on his losing campaigns. This whole competition could change dramatically in a heartbeat and I expect it to do so as I invest more time and money into my campaigns (hopefully Tyler too).

Look forward to my affiliate marketing posts in the next couple of weeks. I’ll outline the entire process that I use in setting up my campaigns and hopefully make a ton of profit!  Subscribe to the RSS feed to stay updated on the latest.

I bet both of you will work harder when the end of competition nearly comes 🙂

Let’s hope so… I haven’t gotten much volume the past 2 weeks, but hopefully that’ll change once I ramp up my Adwords campaigns.

What is a competition without the popular favorite, and the underdog? Who is who? Show us which one you are! Go Gyutae!

Thanks! I think this competition is a little different than our previous one, because there isn’t really a favorite and an underdog. Both Tyler and I are relatively new to PPC affiliate marketing and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top. There hasn’t been much action the past several weeks, but expect things to get heavier when the deadline approaches.

Wow. I somehow ended up here today and gotta say, was a little disappointed to read this post and then click through to Tyler’s site (which I had never seen before) and see the flat out non-interest in a contest/learning experience you guys promised your visitors. Not picking on you guys or trying to be mean, just saying, to those who aren’t regular visitors (like me)… if seems a little like you don’t care about the commitments you made to your readers and can be a bit of a turn off. If that makes sense. That said, I know properly managing your time expectations/availability is one of the hardest things to deal with while having a busy and growing business. 🙂

Hey Rae,
I totally agree with you here. I have no excuses for my inactivity the past couple of weeks. I promised my readers a learning experience and unfortunately haven’t been able to deliver up to this point. However, the competition isn’t over yet, and I expect things to get more interesting towards the end (it ends in 10 days). Hopefully, your opinion will change then. 🙂
