What Type of a Blogger Are You? Discover your Niche and Find Your Blogging Self

The success or failure of a blog is usually determined before the blog even launches. How can I say such a thing? Well personal experience tells me that there are certain niches that I just could not possibly enter into with a blog no matter how hard I tried. A blog requires passion and knowledge about a certain topic and without those 2 crucial elements, failure is inevitable.
For example, pharmacy is an extremely profitable niche with a lot of interest and high demand. Does that mean I can start a pharmacy blog tomorrow and start raking in the cash? Absolutely not. People study for decades on the subject because they are passionate about healthcare and love what they do. I, on the other hand, would have nothing to say on the matter and I would hate my life in the process. Ephredramine blah blah blah…
Topics that I do enjoy include Internet marketing and drums. It’s easy for me to start blogs on these topics and it’s actually a lot of fun. Who would have thought?
Below are some of the other factors that go into topic selection for a blog. For a more detailed account on this subject, read Tibi Puiu’s How to Choose the Right Niche for Your Blog.
- Find something you are passionate about.
- Do you know enough about the subject?
- Manage your time properly. Some topics require a bigger time commitment than others (e.g. presidential elections vs. fishing tips).
- Be sure you have fresh ideas that will differentiate you from the crowd.
- Assess the competition. Don’t get involved with over-saturated markets.
- Think long term. A blog about a certain celebrity might die out in a couple years. Or a blog about the 2008 Olympics will only have a lifespan of about 2 months.
- Maximize income potential. Are there effective means to monetize your content?
- Gauge interest level. No one cares about your plastics manufacturing blog (although nothing surprises me these days). Do your research.
- What type of blogger are you? More on this below.
Topic selection is the most important step in creating a new blog so make sure you do it right the first time around.
5 Types of Bloggers
Topic selection for your blog will also depend heavily on the blogging mold that you best fit into. Which one are you?
The Expert
A thought leader who knows a subject matter particularly well. Gives advice and accumulates a large following.
The Rambler
Discusses a wide variety of topics and uses personality rather than content to attract a following.
The Journalist
Reports industry news and interjects with interesting insights where appropriate.
The Journeyman
Not quite at expert status but relates with readers with a common goal.
The Celebrity
Well-known before starting a blog, which is merely a result of past fame.
In the next couple of weeks, I’ll be writing separate posts that go into greater detail about each of the 5 different blogger types with qualities, benefits, potential, marketing strategies, and examples. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed so you don’t miss out.
In the meantime, take part in the poll. Which blogger type best describes you?

I cant really vote on the poll coz I feel I’m a mixed of the first four. Definitely not a celeb tho. Anyway, nice post mate. Sure knocked some sense into me. Had to stop and think for a while what my purpose in blogging is instead of random brambles.

Select one and become that one!
Great post, I already vote in the poll but I want to see the characteristics of each type of bloggers ^^, and as you said, to blog you need to be passionated about the topic or you will end leaving your blog.
I’ll be describing each of the different types in the next couple of days. Be sure to check in.
I’m a rambler, without the personality. Since I’m self-employed and work at home, I use my blog as the “water cooler” - where I talk about things on my mind. I guess it’s better to share with my few readers, than it is to share with my dog.
The rambler, easy. I’d love to say expert, but I’d be lying just a little bit…
Jason is a 100% rambler hes the next John Cow
I don’t really think you should have to think about picking a niche you like. Anyone can actually can blog in the pharmacy niche: just hire freelance writers that are well versed in the subject. If you treat your blog like a business then you’ll be easily able to negate the cost of hiring writers…
I’m the expert.
Great post on blogging. I am still a beginner so I can’t say what kind of blogger I am. You have done a good research about blogs and how successful they can be. Earning through blogs is a good option with the blogs being very popular with the masses.
The Journalist vs The Journeyman —-
I’m a journeyman on his path to expert and to celebrity fame. gyahaha…:D
