The Social Millionaire – Just Another Million Dollar Wannabe?
April 4, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park
There have been a couple of sites that have made bank using the “million dollar” theme including The Million Dollar Homepage and the Million Dollar Wiki. The first ones were good ideas that gained a lot of attention, but is it still profitable to create a “million dollar” site?

Patrick Hankinson is a 19 year old Internet entrepreneur from Canada who has just started The Social Millionaire, a site that “connects consumers from all the major social networks to advertisers who want to reach this audience by keywords.” The goal is to “raise a million dollars while having a huge number of friends from all the social networks.”

So far, Patrick has made $2,613.99 and gained 354 friends. The million dollar theme has been beat to death but I think this is enough of a unique angle to give it an edge.
Basically how it works is that people buy keywords on the homepage for $5 each and their sites are placed under the chosen keywords. It works exactly like a directory minus the categories.
My main issue with the site is that as it grows, the front page will be overloaded with keywords. Unless Patrick has some sort of solution for that, most of the sites that paid for keywords will not receive any exposure. As for SEO value, the links do pass value – although how much depends on the structure of the site, the overall quality of the links included (unrelated garbage links will lead to Google devaluing everything), and how much authority The Social Millionaire builds up in the search engines over time (updating the blog with fresh unique content will certainly help in that).
For $5 it might not be a bad idea to be included in The Social Millionaire. I really doubt that Patrick will come anything close to making $1 million from the site, but I think it has some potential to do well. If all else fails, he can always build up his blog (although I’m a bit confused as to what his focus for it really is).
The Social Millionaire is sponsoring a $100 prize for the Craziest Internet Marketing Contest You’ve Ever Seen. Look for the WTW logo under a special keyword on The Social Millionaire. First person to comment in this post with the keyword wins an extra entry into the contest. Good luck!

Seems like it has been beat to death, but if he does it the way he’s talking about, it’ll be quite an accomplishment.
It may have been beaten to death, but this is another twist on it. Sometimes success simply depends on taken a proven concept and making it just a little bit different.
Of course he’s not a kid to be running behind something thats isn’t worth.
hard work and clever mind always pays good!
I will admit I called it a foolish idea when it first came out (came across a review on JCow) but he seems to be doing well with marketing it as the money earned shows. Not sure how much of that is profit, but as long as he’s in the green it’s all good.
I will be watching this with interest – sure, one million dollars will be out of the question, however I don’t think he’d mind too much if he made one tenth, or even one hundredth of that
I agree that with a goal that big it would be easy to settle for half.

Patrick’s too clever to be running this dude.
His idea is nowhere foolish when he has the ability to make it reviewed on Cows and elsewhere!
Has the ability? Anyone has the ability. You just have to pay. I could force John Chow to write a review about a snail named Mr. Coots.
Sounds like an interesting concept. Can it be done, Yes, I would say it can.
$1 Million starts with one penny…
Michael
WoW
Thats a pretty strong review there, I hope for the Million Dollar to be won. I am earning a million dollars too, just not from a single blog haha and just not yet…
Good luck everyone.

TRAVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOHOO:)
He has already netted a few thousand dollars, not bad for only being 19.
lets see how he goes.
Best of luck to the new wannabe
He has done great for 19. I believe he could do even better in the future.
Hey Gyutae,
Beer Stock review next?
lol…let’s beat the million dollar concept to death really…
Yo Gyutae, are there two of these posts or am I seeing double? O_O

Wow!Pretty cool.And he’s only 19 years old…
I’m no mathematician but how many $5 purchases equal $2,613.99
Did someone get a keyword for $3.99?
Are there anymore bargain keywords? LOL
Hopefully his site does good, but the totals have me messed up.
Nice observation. That seems a little weird. Perhaps he did give someone a discount.
I’m a goof….nevermind my previous post. It’s $5 at a minimum but you can pay as much as you like.
Shouldn’t be long before the Cow goes and clones it with a “euro” version then sells it off quick.
That would be funny to see a “cow” clone of this.
Michael
Lol…”Cow Millionaire”…
Cool effort there by Patrick!
Considering my newest blog has the title oneyearmillionaire I can’t really agree with you on everything about the millionaire thing being beat to death… the fact is that surfers respond to this… sometimes to reach an audience you can present them with a dream.. a lifestyle, and that can truly attract people
