16 Signs You Know You Need a Vacation From Your Blog
October 6, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park
By the time you read this, I’ll be in Miami ready to cruise the Caribbean to the beautiful Bahamas. As I mentioned in my tips for preparing for a blogging vacation, I’ll be post-dating a few articles for you all this week to continue the flow of useful content here. I’m realizing more and more the importance of consistency in blogging, but that’s for another post later on.
As for going on vacation, I put together a list of signs that show you that you need a break from your blog as well. These are meant to be fun and light-hearted in nature so don’t take them too seriously! Are you a culprit of any of the signs below?
- You own a Wordpress t-shirt
- You wear one of those “I’m blogging this” t-shirts, and then you actually do.
- You recently redesigned your blog theme just because.
- You collect Wordpress plugins just in case you need them.
- You know what John Chow ate for dinner this week.
- You’re following Gary Vaynerchuck’s crazy tips for building a blog
- You have 1000+ “new items” in your Google Reader.
- You’ve published over 300 posts on your blog this year.
- Your blog takes forever to load because of all the widgets and plugins you have installed.
- You have over 10,000 Twitter updates.
- You wish you could go on vacation to Australia just so you can meet Problogger Darren Rowse.
- You’ve written an ebook, just so you can get more RSS subscribers.
- You complain every time your Feedburner stats get messed up - and you know the exact dates of when this has happened.
- You’re subscribed to the Problogger Job Board - even though you have more than enough work for yourself.
- You have a secret man crush on Shoemoney.
- You think Blog World Expo is the equivalent of the Mecca for blogging.
What other signs can you come up with? Leave them in a comment below. Let’s have some fun with this. ![]()

Woops, I must say I’m guilty of quite a few of those
Haha, aren’t we all… I just came back from vacation but I think I need another one already.
cool stuff. We are all guilty of some of these. wHEN YOU KNOW IT’S 3AM in the morning and you are still blogging you definitely need a vacation
You wake up at 3AM to take a piss and you end up checking you blog stats
You know each of your childhood friends nickname on Wordpress.com but can’t remember their last names
You still keep an old 56kbps modem just in case every other method of connecting crashes or an atomic catastrophe occurs
You discover the cure for the cancer and you wonder how could this affect the visits of your blog…
Haha, those are great!
I’m definitely guilty of your first one. There have been times when I wake up in the middle of the night and end up on the computer…
There are also times when I remember someone by their IM screen name or Twitter account rather than their real name.
As for finding the cure for cancer, I’d be more interested in cashing out than getting visits to my blog.
Thanks for sharing!
Those (and Gyuatae’s) cracked me up! I recently read a post on how to tell if you are a blogoholic, too bad I forgot where
You know you are still married only because you actually reference your wife in a post every now and then.
Haha, that’s kinda funny and sad at the same time. Looks like you were reminded of your wife today because your latest post is called “Red Lobster Disappointing, Time Alone With Wife, Priceless”.
knowing what Chow’s meal seems to be a good reason
Well if you guess pho, there’s a good chance that you’re right. John Chow and his crew go out to Dot Com Pho all the time.
I have yet to see anyone actually wearing one of those I’m Blogging This T-shirts in person.
We’ll have to send you one of ours! Shoot me your address (dina@marketleverage.com) and I’ll get you one. I absolutely LOVE this list, it’s hilarious! Other ones bloggers are guilty of:
-Knowing Twitter names before real names
-Posting about a contest before the contest sponsor announces it
-Skipping Starbucks runs to save up for a Blogworld ticket
-You can state the exact amount of Shoemoney’s three highest check photos
I’m sure there are many more!
Those are great, Dina! Twitter name ARE real names, aren’t they?
I’d love to get a t-shirt as well..
People in our office call me MLDina…haha, ok not really. Truth is if they did, I’d probably answer. Send me your address at dina@marketleverage.com, and we’ll see what we can do.
You should get one and wear it on Northwestern’s campus…
That is a hilarious list! Add to No. 5 “You know what John Chow ate for dinner this week.” and remember what the photos look like too
Haha, well if you get big enough.. you’ll take the photos of John Chow’s dinner.
I find building a successful blog is not an easy job.
Of course. No one said it was easy. Building a successful blog is hard work - which is why you need a vacation to recharge.
well buildinga successfull blog is definitely a tough and nerve wrecking job………. it requires lot of time and research…..
Definitely. People need to take action above all else. Research is good and all but it really isn’t productive unless you actually get started and produce on your studies.
This is an interesting list.
I think i need a vacations soon.
Mario
Thanks Mario, are you guilty of any of the symptoms?
I haven’t quite got there yet. There are plenty of points that i am yet to get to. So I guess my vacation is pushed back a little.
Lol cool list there.. Didn’t even know Wordpress shirt exist..Glad I am not considered obsessed then..
When you start getting blogger blocks “writer’s block”.Take a break relax and refresh and refocus, it’s vacation time
Yes, knowing what Chow’s meal seems to be a good reason…
LMAO, I especially liked 5 and 11. I just got 10 out of 16 on that one, I think that is a fail…time to plan a trip. For me I know I need a vacation when I have to force myself to write a post.
