And the First Letter is… (John Chow Review Results)

December 6, 2007 - Written by Gyutae Park

…you’ll just have to subscribe to the feed to find out!

For those of you that don’t know, I launched a huge contest yesterday giving away a free $400 John Chow review. If you haven’t checked out the contest description, be sure to do so here. This is a big winning opportunity for your site that you can’t afford miss out on.

Don’t believe me? I actually ordered a review from John Chow to promote the contest itself and the results have been overwhelming to say the least. At the time of this writing, the contest post on Winning the Web has 31 comments, John Chow’s review of Winning the Web has 55 comments, RSS subscriptions have more than quadrupled, and blog traffic has hit an all-time high. If there was any doubt in my mind about the worthiness of this investment, it has been completely erased. John Chow brings a huge influx of high-quality traffic to Internet-related sites.

Below is a screen shot of my latest traffic report:

Here you can see the relative number of total visits to Winning the Web over the past 4 days. As you can see, the John Chow review pushed traffic to the site way over the top, even more than the day one of my posts made it to the front page of Sphinn.

Not only that, but traffic from JohnChow.com is probably the best in terms of how long people stay on the site and become loyal readers. On average, John Chow readers stay on the site longer, visit more pages, and are more likely to subscribe to the RSS feed.

Here’s another screenshot to prove my point:

Thanks to everyone participating so far. You can view the first letter of the contest code in your RSS feed below.

Nice. I’ll stick around for both the contest and your posts.

Great website! What was your strategy to get traffic when you launched the site?

Gyutae Park on December 6th, 2007

Thanks guys.

@Nick Flame
I took a free blog theme and changed it around to suit my needs.

@Nick
My main strategy to get traffic for the site when I launched it was to network with other bloggers.

help me out here, I don’t get it. I subscribed to the RSS feed and when I click on it in igoogle, i get sent back to the blog page which tells me i need to subscribe to the RSS feed…..etc…etc
I’m stuck in some crazy vortex and can’t get out – I just want the letter!

That’s amazing. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: Great idea Gyutea! And really do have a good blog.

Tevin Anderson on December 7th, 2007

heh. I just checked the alexa Ranking.

I think it can officially be dubbed “The John Chow” effect.

@Marlon
You’re not able to view the actual RSS feed through iGoogle. Instead you will have to subscribe using a feed reader such as Google Reader. You can even add a Google Reader widget to your iGoogle page so that would work very well.

@Tevin Anderson
Thanks for the feedback and the Alexa rankings update. Alexa isn’t really a good metric to use as it is highly biased and inaccurate, but it does show that the John Chow campaign is working well for me.

Nice, I was going to order a John Chow review but I might hold out to see if I can win one ;)

Jerlene on December 9th, 2007 Subscribed to comments via email

Damn. If I don’t win this, I’ll probably just buy a review to get my traffic up. I didn’t want to because it was pricey for that blog but I guess it could do my site a lot of good.

A good point, Jerlene. John Chow reviews bring in loads of traffic. It is worth the money, methinks. But who knows, maybe I`ll win this contest :D

This is a cool website. I think I will come more often.

Yea, its amazing what contests can do for a blog. I’ve had a couple now where all people had to do was comment and they could win a giftcard. Worked wonders…

I am still not convinced with spending $400 with John Chow for whatever traffic changes or commentators you might have seen.

I might be like John Cow, who has not spent a penny on paid advertising yet, but I have seen hike of 50000 users and dripping traffic of 4000-5000 people for a blog with 500 regular visitors. I mean, achieving something like that without spending a penny is a real challenge. I am not against spending money on reviews here though.
