Copycat John Cow Taking Over John Chow?

August 21, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

Nearly 2 years ago when John Chow catapulted his blog’s traffic and income to stratospheric levels, many copycat blogs were born in the make money online niche. Who wouldn’t want to make $40,000 a month from their blog, right? One of these copycats was the infamous JohnCow.com, an obvious parody of John Chow with a catchy tag line of “milking the Internet and making mooney online”. The difference between John Cow and the other copycats was that Cow ironically used his own unique style and employed some creative marketing techniques to gain notice from John Chow himself.

The result? John Cow now has over 7,400 RSS subscribers and ranks #1 in Google for ‘john chow’. Meanwhile, the real John Chow still receives an obscene amount of traffic and income, but is quickly losing market share to his impostor by being penalized in Google and not ranking for his own name.

Of course you can argue that John Chow receives most of his traffic from the massive following that he wields, but what about the people who are looking for him for the first time? They’ll search for ‘john chow’ and see JohnCow.com as the top result - which looks a lot like the real thing at first glance.

JohnCow.com was recently bought out by a trio of highly-experienced Internet marketers led by Jason Katzenback. These guys run TrafficKahuna, a paid membership site containing Internet marketing tools, and have supposedly made a lot of money online. In a showcase of skills, they even defeated Garry Conn in a recent heated cowpetition.

I’ll be the first to admit that the new John Cow offers a lot of good Internet marketing strategies that everyone who is serious about their blogs should look at. Honestly, the content there is a lot better than John Chow’s (who can pretty much do whatever he wants with celebrity status) and I wouldn’t be surprised if John Cow completely took over as the “real thing” in a couple of years.

Watch out, John Chow!

John Cow has a great free ebook called “Building a Business, NOT a Blog!” that I definitely recommend you check out.

Good post, you have to keep fighting the good fight even when you’re making $40K a month.

Gyutae Park on August 22nd, 2008 10:25 am

Yeah definitely. 40k can dwindle down to nothing if you don’t stay up to date and keeping things revving up.

I am printing getting the book and reading it right now. A lot of have been witness to this sly take over, and it was really smooth on the cows part. As smooth as butter, oh sorry cow!

Gyutae Park on August 26th, 2008 12:31 am

lol, great analogy Debo. I have to give the cow props as well. I expected John Cow to go “down udder” once the sale happened, but it actually quite the opposite.

It’s amazing how many people have made money or received traffic just from talking about John Chow.

Gyutae Park on August 26th, 2008 12:29 am

Well the entertainment/celebrity niche is a good example of how people follow famous people. There’s tons of traffic and money to be made by reporting on other people’s lives.

John Chow will never run out of minions. That’s totally fine with me, though. I loved the John Cow ebook, it was rather an intense read. They know their stuff.

Gyutae Park on August 26th, 2008 12:28 am

You’re right, the notoriously infamous will always have a following no matter what. John Chow is a celebrity now, and it doesn’t really matter what he does on his blog. People are intrigued and want to follow his life.

John Cow is funnier than John Chow heheh. And one more thing, John Chow is doing some black heat SEO.

Gyutae Park on September 2nd, 2008 5:34 pm

Well, yeah the Cow is funnier than John Chow but also offers a lot of informative information on Internet marketing as well. As for John Chow doing black hat SEO, he was banned a year ago and never got his rankings back.

I have to admit that i like John Cow much more than the original. I am afraid John Chow is now more famous for being famous than anything else.

Gyutae Park on September 2nd, 2008 5:35 pm

Like I said, it really doesn’t matter what John Chow does at this point. He’s famous for doing what he does, and there will always be interest there… kinda like how Britney Spears is all over the tabloids even though she’s a total “has been”.

Looks like someone is kissing some ass! LOL just playing man. The new Cow defintiely knows what he’s doing… I think because his real first name is the same as mine… yup, that’s the ONLY reason!
