Clue #23 – 1CoolFile Blog Directory
As I mentioned in a previous post, I am not a big fan of blog directories for link building purposes. Not only do they provide no real SEO value but no one really uses them to find what they need. Regardless, Steve McGrath of 1CoolFile is sponsoring a $100 review here on Winning the Web. 1CoolFile could use a lot of improvement, but you can help Steve out by submitting your blog to his directory free.

My suggestion would be to get rid of the interstil advertising. It is very distracting and doesn’t belong on a non-content website such as a blog search site.

I agree with Michael 100%! Way too busy and a little confusing. For people with little patience, it’s a place they would quickly pass by.

Just to be clear here,I don’t agree with Gyutae about the SEO benefit of directories. He has his opinion and I have mine. Now, in my case, 1 Cool File is both a file and blog directory/marketplace. You can check my own blog McGrath Dot Ca. I use all field for those that want to use it. If you do reviews, it’s another options for you.
A part from my own blog there, some blogs have a PR4(older ones) on their listing but don’t use the “anchor text” option to the fullest(new). That’s more SEO for them if used.

This was a little to complicated for me to subscribe to. I really don’t have the time to figure it out based on the little bit of benefit it might provide.

Seperate input screen should be done for Blogs vs. software. Many of the options are for software and not applicable.
Added ShanKrila.com to teh directory. It definitely could use some CSS makeover and I second Mike about separating the blog/software submission. It could definitely confuse the ont-so-techie publishers.

I can’t do nothing about the submission right away. So please, read the tutorial. It will help greatly. Hint: use the “Blog Directory” for the main category. Then, you will have access to 160 sub categories. Your blog can have more than one.
Question: I have over 6900 software that were added. Are you telling me that bloggers are not intelligent and can’t read? Please, don’t tell me it’s true!

Mike: That’s what I was thinking but themes and plugins programmers/bloggers will have to use a different screen in that case.

Definitely agree with everyone. The adverts on the site are just terrible. Please rearrange or color code them better.
Now very user friendly. After about 10 minutes of searching, I gave up adding my blog listing to the site. I kept going back to the FAQ’s and find the commerical keyword ads annoying.
Would love to try the site but its too confusing to find the free listing.
Found it! Finally got register and listed on the site. Not a fun site to navagate through.
site is difficult to navigate, requires too much scrolling. most directories i have seen only require a few simple clicks.

I’d definitely get rid of the Kontera intext advertising and make the links above the header more attractive. To be honest, they look pretty spammy.
I removed Kontera for now. I hope that Adsense will be click more to compensate for that lost.
I replaced the top header links(those unused by advertisers) with more useful softwares for bloggers/sites owners. It’s softwares that I started to use myself(wow!). If anyone here are serious about making money online, those are worthy investment when you get some cash.
For the look and how to add a blog, I heard you and will be taking steps to change it for making it easier for bloggers.

It may make your job easier later on my directory and other directories that extract some metadata.

I submitted mine the other day, but I didn’t like much of anything about the site (although I see it is improving with the previous suggestions, which is always a positive). It seemed to be very difficult for me to actually submit my blog. It was also very cluttered, which has since been fixed.
Another problem I had was that I was viewing it on my father’s computer with 800X640 resolution and I couldn’t find the login at all with it being on a right sidebar. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned (I knew one day I’d say that even though I’m still in my early 20s), but a login halfway down the page, on the right (which I had to scroll over to b/c of the resolution) completely threw me off.
If some of you can do a software review(did a few on your blog), please contact me on 1 Cool File and add your blog if not done.
I will address some issues about directories:
1- Submitting to directories give you links(a link is a link)
2- Yes, it’s not fun on any of them but your must do it
3- Use the anchor text options if available
4- Some will give you traffic and some don’t

I see, What I said 4 months ago now come to publicly realized. This site in overall is too complicated to be a blog directory and it really need a redesign.
