The Best Commercials of Super Bowl 2008

February 4, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

superbowl.jpgCongratulations to the New York Giants on the phenomenal win over the previously undefeated New England Patriots. This game was a huge upset and extremely fun to watch. I don’t normally follow NFL football too much but this was definitely one of the most exciting games I have ever seen.

The Super Bowl is also known for the high-profile advertisements that are aired during the television broadcast. Each of these commercials are worth millions of dollars because the Super Bowl is a program with high ratings and an extremely large reach of more than 90 million viewers. In 2007, 30 seconds of advertising time cost $2.6 million. In some cases, people watch the Super Bowl not for the football but for the commercials themselves.

This year the commercials did not disappoint. There were a lot of great clips from big-brand companies like Budweiser, Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Under Armour, Audi, Hyundai, T-Mobile, and more.

My favorites for 2008 are below:

Bud Light

Budweiser is a perfect advertiser for the Super Bowl because football and beer go hand in hand. Many of the audience members drink beer during the game so it makes sense that the company would send messages about their brand. The commercials this year were witty and probably the most entertaining. Props to Bud. I especially liked the fire breathing man and “Bood Light”.

Diet Pepsi Max

A humorous commercial with people nodding off at random places, including Super Bowl commentator Joe Buck. We’ve all been through it, but now some spruced up Diet Pepsi should do the trick in waking you up.

Cars.com

This commercial has bunch of normal scenes containing a guy buying a car at a dealership followed by a really random and over the top twist at the end. It’s crazy at times but it’s memorable at the same time. Good work.

T-Mobile

I’m a big basketball fan so I really liked how Charles Barkley and Dwayne Wade were included in this commercial. Big Chuck won’t stop yappin’ away.

Amp Energy

This one’s my personal favorite this year. A trucker dude connects jumper cables to his nipples, hooks them up to a car battery, and starts dancing around while drinking Amp Energy Drink to jump start a car. Another one of those over the top commercials that catches your attention.

Nice list, there is a cool list of the best commercials going on over at Seekler. It collects a bunch of peoples lists and combines them for the over all best. You should import your list in to cast you vote, you do have to rank them best to worst instead of just listing your favorites. You can just rank your favorites. Trust me trying to rank all of the commercials is not worth it…

take a look, it is pretty cool. There is also a list of the best Super Bowl commercials of all time.

Haha, that was definitely one of my favorites as well. The romantic fire breathing man. “The ability to breathe fire no longer available in Bud Light.”

I was actually quite UNimpressed this year. Usually we are laughing at the commercials but none really did much for us this time:( Will was good but he’s such a dork that you laugh at him anyways and the nodding off one was alright. I’ve seen much better in the past. Now, I’m off to check out the Godaddy one…what?…just ’cause I’m a girl doesn’t mean I can’t be curious! LOL

Gyutae Park on February 4th, 2008

Haha thanks for sharing Lori. I didn’t really understand the GoDaddy one. It just seemed like they were using the sex appeal thing way too much and it was a bit lame if you ask me. Also, I don’t understand why Internet companies waste money on a Super Bowl ad. They can get a much better ROI by using online methods like PPC. Offline advertising is more for companies aiming for branding. Definitely a marketing mishap for Godaddy if you ask me.

Who doesn’t use sex appeal these days on TV? Unfortunately, it has come to that kind of crap and I bet they had tons of people checking out their website to find that commercial…what kind of people is a different story!

Indeed… Looks like there will be 90 million more porn site domains registered by GoDaddy tomorrow. Haha.

There were definitely some good commercials, but compared to years past they were somewhat disappointing. The “bood lite” was definitely a classic.

Gyutae Park on February 4th, 2008

I don’t remember too much from last year’s commercials other than the Taco Bell lions and the “All by Myself” robot. Bood lite was awesome this year though.

I agree. AMP was the funniest. Just a great idea. I laugh everytime I see it.

Gyutae Park on February 4th, 2008

Haha yeah. Funny but disturbing at the same time.

We just posted our 4th annual study of how well super bowl advertisers integrated online and offline advertising – we’ll be writing more about this on our blog, but the preliminary findings are already up on our site: http://reprisemedia.com/scorecard.aspx.

Gyutae Park on February 4th, 2008

Interesting. Thanks for pointing that out Miguel. Reprise Media does some great stuff.
