Affiliate Marketing Showdown – Tyler Cruz vs. Gyutae Park (Again)

August 13, 2008 - Written by Gyutae Park

samuraiRemember that guy named Tyler Cruz? If you recall, I edged him out 55-52 in a previous competition where we had bloggers vote for either of us by writing a post. It was a lot of fun and I think everyone involved benefited. However, it looks like Tyler is finally out for revenge – this time in an area where neither of us are really proven or experienced: PPC affiliate marketing.

This is an area of Internet marketing that I’d really like to become better at and I think a little friendly competition will help to motivate me and finally get the ball rolling.

So without further adieu, I’d like to announce the unveiling of a new type of online competition, an affiliate marketing showdown between 2 Internet marketers starting from scratch. You’ve read my thoughts and qualms about reality shows like Top Affiliate Challenge. Hopefully a competition like this will be good for the community and build up exposure for Tyler and myself as well.

So how will it work?

There are some rules in place to ensure that the contest is fair. Tyler is a trustworthy guy and a worthy adversary, but anything can happen in the heat of battle. Basically, whoever nets the most from PPC affiliate marketing during the competition wins. Here are the “official” rules as laid out in Tyler’s post:

  • Only net profit counts. If we both finish in the red, then the person who lost the least amount of money will be declared the winner.
  • Only traffic/income from direct PPC marketing counts. For example, we’re allowed to use AdWords or YSM, but not organic traffic from our existing sites. Non-PPC traffic will not be counted.
  • Any sort of trickery is not allowed including borrowing campaigns from a super affiliate friend. All campaigns must be our own.
  • We must share our stats (net profit) with each other as often as possible – preferably every day or every other day.
  • We are not allowed to receive special money such as sponsorship money from affiliate networks to use for this competition.
  • We’re allowed to use past or existing campaigns that we have set up.

Time Frame

The competition will run from August 12th 2008, 8:00PM Pacific Time to September 12th 2008, 8:00PM PT.

The Stakes

In our previous competition, we had the loser give away $300 to a random reader. This time, it’ll work a bit differently. The loser of the affiliate marketing showdown will have to record a video of himself reciting a speech that the winner writes for him. He will then have to post it on his blog for everyone to see, and the winner has rights to post it on his as well. A classic humiliation penalty… what should we get Tyler to say? Hmm… 😛

Final Thoughts

Alright, so I wish I could say that I’ll crush Tyler again in this competition and make a ton of money in the process, but I am certain it won’t be all that easy. The whole point of running this event is to motivate us into getting started in affiliate marketing and to work harder to improve our campaigns. Affiliate marketing has a ton of potential and I hope that something like this brings us over the top while keeping readers like you in the loop on how we actually perform.

Tyler definitely knows what he’s doing. He makes a full-time income through his sites online and recently picked up affiliate marketing on the side. Although he’s frequently in the red and loses money on his campaigns, that doesn’t mean I’m safe for the win!

As you all know, I work as an SEO for a top agency while starting up my own projects on the side. I’ve had some success in affiliate marketing, but it’s really nothing to brag about or guarantee me the win. Time is definitely an issue for me as well, but I hope to learn a ton and explode my affiliate income. Wish me luck!

I’ll be giving frequent updates on my affiliate marketing progress with stats and strategies, so you definitely do not want to miss out on my postings in the next month. Be sure to subscribe to the RSS feed now.

interesting I had something similar with mark from I actually spent more money and got more stats but it wasn’t really good since it was 1 week, but this should be good since it is 1 month – gives you some some time

Gyutae Park on August 15th, 2008

Yeah I don’t think a week is nearly enough time. A month might actually be pretty short too. Hopefully this will help me to get my campaigns going. Tyler and I are pretty much on the same level in terms of affiliate marketing experience so it should be a good time. I’m coming after you next, Ian!

Very cool, Alan. Good luck to you and your campaigns. What was your main traffic source for affiliate marketing previously?
